FORMULA 1 DRIVERS TO THROW SUPPORT BEHIND ANTI RACISM AT AUSTRIAN GP SEASON OPENER

F1’s drivers are ready to rally behind the anti-racism campaign. They will have the opportunity to take a knee on the grid ahead of Sunday’s season-opening Austrian GP.

The group of 20 drivers who form the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association has decided with the help and consent of Chairman Alex Wurz to show support against discrimination in recent times. A statement released by GPDA said that drivers will be allowed to express their support in different ways as they please.
The statement reads, “the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association has held a number of virtual meetings with all 20 drivers to agree on how best to show their collective support for the fight against racism ahead of its weekends Grand Prix – all 20 drivers stand United with their teams against racism and prejudice, at the same time encouraging the principles of diversity, equality, and inclusion and supporting formula 1’s commitment to these,“Together, the drivers will all show their public support for this cause on Sunday ahead of the race”
Drivers will take a knee on the grid after the national anthem. They will also wear T-shirts carrying the message. The message of support will be displayed on their crash helmets and cars.
The FIA announced it had donated approximately €1m to Formula 1’s new foundation that is aimed at improving diversity in the world of sports. F1’s chairman Chase Cary donated $1m to the project on his own.

This whole support from all sport disciplines was championed by the Black Lives Matter movement after the murder of George Floyd and many of the black deaths. The NBA, NFL, soccer, are all fighting against racism and believe their support and voice will help bring an end to it.

Lewis Hamilton, six times Formula 1 champion spoke to Skysports on Thursday. He said he had yet to decide whether he would take a knee to support the movement this Sunday even though he has been on of the people who always spoke about diversity and equality for a long time.
When Floyd died, some athletes were grieving on social media, some were not and that was when Lewis took to Instagram to post “I see those of you who are staying silent” so why is he still deciding whether to take the knee to support the movement now?
According to him, people are paying their respect in different ways and so is he.
How will Formula 1 improve diversity? Chase Cary has three primary social initiatives that would help

According to Chairman Chase Carey, he and his cohorts came out with three social initiatives last year, thus Sustainability, environmental issues, and diversity. He emphasized on how they can use education and opportunities to improve diversity and solve the problems of sustainability as well.
GDPA director Romain Grosjean said that diversity is key and it was important for F1 to take a stand to support the right initiative.
Red Bulls’ Max Verstappen thinks everyone should be against racism, which is very true and also talked about how important it is for everyone to “feel comfortable and equal”

It is very important for us to realize that our real enemy at the moment is not one another but a pandemic that is probably going to go on for a long time and might wipe away half of the Earth’s population.
